My First Term English Test 1 Never too old to learn, never too young to teach A few years ago I was teaching English to a wonderful group of 4 year olds. I was very proud of the progress we were making, and of the fact that I never used L1* in the classroom. A month into the course we had a new girl join our group. Her reaction to this English environment was both surprising and amusing.

Marta was a very bright, enthusiastic and affectionate child. Her parents had explained to her that she was going to "English Class", but Marta hadn't quite worked out what that meant. When the class finished I overheard her telling her mother, "I like English class and my teacher is very nice, but Mummy, she can't speak properly yet."

When she arrived the next day we went through the usual routine of naming the clothes she was wearing in English. "Shoes!" I said to Marta, pointing enthusiastically, "Your SHOES!!". Marta looked at me sadly and lent forward. Putting her face up close to mine and taking my head in her little hands, she said very slowly, and very clearly "ZA-PA-TOS, ZAPATOS!" (which is Spanish for shoes). She then began to walk around the classroom pointing to things and teaching me how to say them "properly"!!

I have seen just about everything during my years as a teacher, but nothing has made me laugh quite so much as this lesson I received from 4 year old Marta!
